iPhone Glass Repair
One very common problem for iPhones and other smart phones is shattered glass. In fact, iPhone glass repair is one of the most common issues faced by iPhone owners when it comes to accidental damage. That leaves us to question how the iPhone glass breaks.
There are many reasons that outer glass on the iPhone can break, but is most commonly caused from the phone dropping or falling. The glass tends to break due to a drop, but dropping your phone doesn’t always cause the glass to break. If you own an iPhone, it’s likely that your phone has been dropped many times and never broken. It seems there is something specific that makes the glass break. Well, there are many factors that can cause the glass on your phone to break upon impact.
One of the most obvious factors that influences the glass breaking is the height your phone falls from and the surface it hits. When your phone falls from a high place, the impact is greater, making the glass more likely to break. Likewise, the harder the impact surface is, the more likely your iPhone glass will break. This is, of course, common sense. Everyone knows it would be better to drop your phone onto carpet from 2 feet than on the concrete from 10 feet. There are other factors that influence your iPhone glass breaking, though. We went to South Florida to test some of these factors. Using a high-speed video camera and many iPhones, we worked to discover the most common ways iPhone glass breaks.
After spending a day breaking iPhones, we discovered to important facts. First, the best way to break the iPhone glass is to drop your phone face down. Second, watching glass break at high speeds is very entertaining. Since we couldn’t see the glass break as well when we dropped the iPhone facedown, we were only able to see the corners break.
When we dropped the iPhone from other orientations, it was surprisingly hard to break the iPhone glass. In fact, we had to add more velocity to our corner drops to make them break. We also tested direct glass impact by using a still ball dropped straight onto the iPhone. This was done to stimulate running into an object or a table while the phone was in your pocket. This caused the glass to shatter, but the LCD remained functional and intact.
We prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the orientation the iPhone drops in is a key component to whether the glass breaks or not. We had a hard time reproducing glass failures consistently in our lab, but are short tests were not very comprehensive. Many customers have told us they have broken their iPhone glass from a distance as short as 2 feet. Of course, glass doesn’t like to be hit with sharp objects or bend. Most of the worst impacts happen when the phone contacts a surface first and then falls facedown. This causes the glass to bend and twist during the impacts, thus breaking the glass.
Luckily, our tests showed that the iPhone glass is not easily broken. Of course, many iPhone owners would argue that point.
